Palanok Castle, Mukacheve

Sitting on a hilltop above town, Palanok Castle saw use by several royal families and was later transformed into a prison. Dating back to the 1300s, the site was once a powerful fortress; 164 canons protected it and a moat with a wooden wall ran around the estate. You can explore the castle's gardens and enter its old humid chambers on your own, or ask for a guided tour. You'll have a chance to visit the mysterious complex of underground tunnels that connect 130 rooms. On a tour, you'll hear many tales and legends about the site. There's also a small history museum at the castle. Plan a Mukacheve trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • There is no palace luxury, but there are a lot of discoveries from the history of Ukraine and the Carpathian Mountains. There are magnificent views of Mukachevo and the district. There are a lot of historical artifacts and interesting exhibits. For two hours we wandered through dungeons, halls, museums and observation decks. Time passed unnoticed. If possible, I will take time to visit this castle again.

  • A very special place. My kid loved it. Everything is cheap accessible and you actually don't even need a guyed to tour the castle. The cafe there is also quite nice. It is very cheap and tasty at the same time. A small bat that lives there is just hilarious and kids love it. Excellent spot for the weekend trip.
  • Simply amazing castle! I enjoyed immensely exploring every bit of it I could. The views are enchanting, one can just imagine how life a few centuries ago looked like. I’m admiring the staff’s attitude too - you only have to pay for the entrance (and for a guide, if you like), there are no extra charges of any kind once you are in. Btw, there is drinkable water pumped from the well - just the thing in the hot summer!
