Nestled in the arid valley of Little Karoo, the town of Oudtshoorn remains the hub of everything ostrich-related, housing the world's largest population of the flightless birds.
Do your shopping at Peter Bayly Wines and Outeniqua Farmers' Market. Step off the beaten path and head to Gallery Route 62 & Coffee Café and Lugro Ostrich Leather Products. Venture out of the city with trips to Calitzdorp (Boplaas & De Krans Wines), Zorgfontein Game Farm (in Great Brak River) and De Rust (Meiringspoort & Meiringspoort Waterfall). There's still lots to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Santos beach, tour the pleasant surroundings at Meerkat Magic, get engrossed in the history at C.P Nel Museum, and do a tasting at Karusa Vineyards.

You can drive from Knysna to Oudtshoorn in 2 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Traveling from Knysna in April, expect a bit cooler with lows of 13°C in Oudtshoorn. On the 19th (Thu), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Swellendam.

Regarded as South Africa's third-oldest town, Swellendam contains over 50 provincial heritage sites and well-preserved examples of Cape Dutch architecture.
Step off the beaten path and head to Kunstehuijs Art Gallery and Drostdy Museum. Head to IBIS Gallery and Barrydale Hand Weaversfor plenty of shopping.
