As one of South Africa's most popular beach destinations, the resort town of Plettenberg Bay comes to life in December and January, when the holiday homes fill up with domestic tourists and foreigner visitors.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Featherbed Nature Reserve and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Brenton on Sea and Buffalo Bay. Nestled in the arid valley of Little Karoo, the town of Oudtshoorn remains the hub of everything ostrich-related, housing the world's largest population of the flightless birds.
Start off your visit on the 14th (Thu): do a tasting at Boplaas, see the interesting displays at Calitzdorp Museum, and then take a memorable drive along Swartberg Pass. On the 15th (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: look for gifts at La Chocolaterie Rococo, then experience rural life at Safari Ostrich Show Farm, then relax in the rural setting at Highgate Ostrich Show Farm, and finally take an in-depth tour of C.P Nel Museum.

Renowned as a premier whale-watching destination, Hermanus grew from a quaint fishing village nestled on Walker Bay.
Step off the beaten path and head to Grotto Beach and Voelklip Beach. Change things up with a short trip to Stony Point Penguin Colony in Betty's Bay (about 50 minutes away). There's more to do: stroll through Fernkloof Nature Reserve and enjoy the sand and surf at Kwaaiwater.

Do a combination of bus, flight, and taxi from Oudtshoorn to Hermanus in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and taxi. In December in Hermanus, expect temperatures between 30°C during the day and 19°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Cape Town.
