National Palace Museum, Shilin

4.1
#1 of 3,838 in Things to do in Taiwan
Home to an unsurpassed collection of Chinese artifacts and artworks, National Palace Museum preserves nearly 10,000 years of Chinese history with some items dating back to Neolithic times. Most of its 700,000 pieces--including ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, religious sculptures, jade carvings, weapons, and Qing and Ming dynasty furniture--were collected by Chinese emperors themselves. Officially founded in the Forbidden City in 1925, the museum was moved to its present building in 1965 and then expanded on several occasions due to the sheer size of the collection. Do not miss the most popular exhibits: a skillfully carved piece of jade shaped like a cabbage with two grasshoppers hiding in its leaves, a meat-shaped stone, and a bronze bell specially made for King Li of Zhou. • Must visit place to learn Chinese history and culture. Main exhibition changes from time to time. Plan at least half day here. Join the guided tour if you are press in time and/or don't know where to start. For those have plenty of time, rent the audio device by the entrance. You can go through the exhibitions at your own pace and spent as long as you want at an article. The guided tour goes through the main articles. It doesn't give you the chance to go through every one of them. We spent 5 hours there and only went through 2 of the 3 floors of exhibition hall 1. Definitely wear a comfortable shoes. There's a lot of walking and standing. Your feet will thank you for that. :-)
  • Good place to visit either during the daytime or evening. There are many treasures there for people to visit and stay. With warm services and many unique gifts there. Also there are restaurants there for dining. It is worth to stay there for 1-2 days for enjoying the painting, treasures, sight seeing and dining. The transportation is convinced for people to get there either driving the car or take the public transportation
