Stroll through mysterious Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) lined with rows of red lanterns hanging in front of quaint Chinese teahouses and inns. The narrow cobblestone street has changed little since the gold rush era of the town. Its traditional architecture, hilly surroundings, and misty weather evoke the atmosphere of the Academy-awarded anime "Spirited Away," attracting flocks of Japanese tourists and Ghibli fans. Eat your way through numerous food stalls packed with yummy traditional treats. Keep off the stairs at dusk when lanterns start to light up, or you will be trapped in the crowd of tourists trying to capture this scenic moment with cameras. Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) Reviews
Visited with a bunch of coworkers. Our "guide" was a friend who lived in Taiwan. We went on a Saturday and it was raining. The place was still pack. Lots of things to buy, all the things that you.... more »
First the good. Very atmospheric and charming: narrow alleys lined with small shops and restaurants. Very photogenic, particularly after dark when the red lanterns are lit - and assuming you can... more »
Great place to take some pictures and amazing street food. The stuffed fish balls near the beginning of the street from the bus stop are amazing. They’re pork and soup inside of a fish ball and the soup inside with the pork is fantastic. Honestly better than any of the soup dumplings I’ve had in Taiwan. Lots of small souvenir shops around as well and you could expect to spend half a day there even with transit. You could make it your whole day if you want a quieter day.
I think we would have liked this place better if we had come on a weekday, domestic tourists seem to love it. There are street stalls selling all sorts of food and souvenir items but not the usual harassment to buy stuff you get in other tourist areas. Views are absolutely stunning and will worth the visit.
