Meiringspoort, De Rust

Crossing the same river 25 times and ending at a waterfall, Meiringspoort slices through a gorge offering scenic views of intriguing rock formations and a mountain range, much of which is a listed World Heritage Site. The construction of the pass took place from 1856 to 1858 and proved to be quite an endeavor, since the area was prone to floods and landslides and the mountain seemed almost impenetrable. The engineer Andrew Bain--whose technique of cutting through large boulders was essential for the construction--named the pass after Petrus Johannes Meiring, a farmer who was the first person to pass through it in 1800. • Drove through the pass on our way back from Prince Albert. Not a long drive but spectacular rock formations  more »
  • It isn't a long drive through the pass, and even though we drove through in the height of the drought, it was still beautiful. There are stops along the way which are safe and there are people there.....  more »
  • It's a beautiful place to stop and admire God's creation. You hear the birds, see small animals, read interesting facts about animals and plants. Beautiful scenery of the mountains and great for a quick stop when in need of a public restrooms. Clean as well.
  • Overwhelming beauty of the massive mountains, a beautiful waterfall is a very short distance from the road. If you are felling brave its a great experiance to jump into the rockpool from a 10m cliff. The area is very well maintained with clean bathroom facilities and a garden. The trail to the waterfall is very safe with steps cast into the rock in places where its difficult to climb. There are also hand rails all the way which makes it safe. There is a small museum that tells the story of how the road was built and provides info on the unique and interesting ecosystem of the mountains.
