Groot Constantia, Constantia

4.1
#1 of 36 in Wineries in Cape Town
Groot Constantia represents one of South Africa's oldest wine estates, with origins dating back to the late 1600s. This fully operational farm boasts a rich 300-year history. Insired by the late Dutch Renaissance style, the site's original manor house featured white marble and red stone. You can take a bus tour to see best views of the vineyards and the estate itself, or take a guided cellar tour and experience first-hand how the wine is made. Be sure to stop at the estate's museum, which offers a glimpse into its rich history. Discover how to plan a Cape Town trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.

  • Strolled through the grounds on a gorgeous hot sunny Sunday afternoon and had a glass of delicious wine in the shade. Lots of families and friends eating although we didn’t. Beautiful spot.  more »
  • The Winery is situated between Cape mountains and the sea and offers a beautiful entrance in the South African wine industry with its architecture and history. Two lovely restaurants round off the visit. Only the mass operation and the somewhat impersonal trying way serve the overall impression and not quite match the appearance.

  • Very nice grounds. Good wine. The food was both good. This time however, eaten. It is good to come with plenty of time, then even the vineyards can be viewed. But very many people.

  • Having been to many wine estates in the West Cape I thought I should at least visit the oldest. The grounds are extensive and beautiful and the terrace eating space is sophisticated. There are several Dutch Cape buildings across the estate and lots of old tall oak trees. There is a good view of table mountain from the terrace area. Despite the grandeur of the wine tasting rooms I was tempted to taste or eat as the place lacked something.
  • We had some wine and food in the Deli. Food was good. Cheese platter and a salad. The white wine wasn’t that good. (Can’t remember the name). Service although very busy was very professional and quick. We didn’t have any views of the winelands while we eat. Maybe there is a place but we didn’t see it.
  • We visited the Jonkershuis restaurant for our year end lunch. Enjoyed every minute of it. We were seated outside under the trees and took in the spectacular view! The food was really good (we selected the celebration menu) and fantastic value for money. I even had a chance to purchase some wines to take home. Overall a wonderful experience and will definitely return!
  • It remains the best winery in the Cape. Best cuisine and location. You can easily lose yourself in the past. Beautiful gardens and historical buildings. Very elegant.
  • Great wine, a bit noisy and very touristy but enjoyable, one of South Africa's most historic wine estates. Especially loved the Chardonnay 2017, Pinotage 2016 and Constantia Rood 2016.
