South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town Central

4.5
Established in 2000 by members of the Jewish Diaspora, South African Jewish Museum remains part of a synagogue complex, built in 1905. The exhibits narrate the history of South Africa's Jewish community, with a special focus on their fight for equality and struggle to maintain a distinct heritage. In addition to the Jewish memorabilia, the museum also displays a large collection of Japanese miniature art. To plan Cape Town vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

  • Unfortunately they would not allow me in because I refuse to record my identification number on their paper. I showed them identification but still refused. Couldn't give an answer why they wanted my identity number. Interestingly, they allowed Jewish people in without filling out details.
  • Great explanation about the creation of a Jewish community in South Africa. Very modern and with a lot of unusual details, like the reconstruction of a Lithuanian shtetl, a typical Jewish village from the country that brought around 40.000 Jews to South Africa. Definitely worth a visit.
