Lion's Head, Cape Town Central

4.8
Hike up to Lion's Head, a dramatic peak overlooking the city and offering panoramic views of Table Mountain National Park. The 669 m (2,195 ft) tall mountain lies next to the smaller, flat-topped Signal Hill, also known as Lion's Rump. You can reach the top on foot only on a relatively easy, scenic trek from Signal Hill. Although steep, the hike, suitable for children, doesn't present a challenge and will reward you with a picturesque picnic spot and viewpoint. • Whether for sunrise or sunset, climbing Lion's Head is always a pleasure. You can meet the Dassies and Table Mountain with more height. The view over the ocean and the city is breathtaking! Allow 40 minutes if you are in great shape but rather an hour if you want to go quietly. Attention, although Lion's Head is rather accessible, that climbs!

  • First 200 meters are a little challenging, but once you pass them, you’re in for a breathtaking hike. On a clear day you can literally see forever. You’ll be climbing in circular fashion and every few...  more »
  • Simply a must if you're in Cape Town. Is also super for a trail run :) The sunset is gorgeous from the top but also in the morning, you have a wonderful view.

  • Great hike, not too tough, but if you looking for a good workout you can pick up the pace and get the blood pumping. Stunning vantage point to view Cape Town, Table Mountain and many other neighbouring areas. If you're taking your dog just know there will be necessary to pick them up at some stage, but very doable, doggies love the hike just like us and there is enough space at the summit for them to run around. All and all a great trip to make, don't miss it!
  • This part of the mountain is incredibly popular with folk who enjoy the short but rigorous hike to the top of lions head. The 360 degree views from the summit are remarkable and ever changing depending on the weather or time of day. This is a moderate hike that my 7 year old son managed fine. There are some quite exposed sections so care must be taken.
  • The best city hike for people who are fit. The best views when you get to the top. Better than Table Mountain in terms of 360 visibility! Just a very steep climb so be prepared with water and the correct shoes on the day.
  • Hike up! not for the weak hearted. Moderate to difficult hike for an average person. But it’s a must do! You get to see some amazing views (don’t forget a camera) and meet super cool people (like most hikers). Once you get on the top, you see the Atlantic, unobstructed view of table mountain, 12 apostles, the Signal Hill, and the city of Cape Town. 5 stars and strongly recommend to everyone. Try to do a sunrise or a sunset hike. It’s worth it! I did a sunrise one (so I was there at 5 am. But there were at least 50 more people there by that time). Take plenty of water.
  • Beautiful breathtaking views all-around!! Good trail to hike up the mountain. Completely free of charge, wonderful experience! There's a small shop at the foot of the mountain for people to hydrate and recover after hiking. Nice area on top of mountain to relax and enjoy the views. A must do hiking trail! Enjoy!
