View the human skulls and bones decorating the interior walls of Capela dos Ossos. A Franciscan monk built this chapel in the 16th century to encourage contemplation about the afterlife and our fleeting time on earth. At the entrance to the Church of St. Francis, you will find this small chapel, which contains the skeletons of approximately 5,000 monks. Skulls and bones cover the eight pillars inside the structure, as well as its walls, and two skeletons hang from ropes. The ceiling is brick and painted with themes of death. Though not for the faint of heart, this site represents a look into a particular time and belief system. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Evora trip simple and quick.

Capela dos Ossos Reviews
The idea of "reminding" fellow monks of the transitory nature of life by decorating the internal walls with thousands of skeletons from a relocating cemetery is quite something. Hard to keep reminding... more »

Cool place to see. Only 5 euros entry for the bone chapel plus a small museum and a nativity scene exhibition. Well worth the visit if you are in the area. A bit creepy to see all the bones around a golden altar. Also not a bad view of the town from the rooftop of the museum. Lots of parking about 5 min walk away, through a park with a small cafe and a few peacocks in the garden.
This is a special place that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Besides the creepy factor of the chapel (which is fun in and of itself), there is a lot to take in on the top floors. The Nativity scene collection is impressive. The rooftop terrace had nice views as well. I'd say this is a must-see in Évora.
