Patan Museum, Patan (Lalitpur)

#1 of 16 in Museums in Kathmandu Valley
Visit Patan Museum to observe the traditional sacred art of Nepal in a prominent architectural setting. Once a Buddhist monastery dating from 1734, the building rests on even older foundations that may go all the way back to the Licchavi Period (3rd to 9th century). To fight building decay, some parts were reconstructed to their original appearance, while some were adapted to the needs of the museum, thanks to joint efforts of the governments of Nepal and Austria. Inspect the exhibited rare objects of Nepal's cultural history, as well as the unique local handicrafts. If you want to rest, visit the museum cafe in the inner courtyard and taste a mix of traditional and Western delicacies. • Any small museum of bronze collections that does not deserve the detour except to enjoy the small pleasant garden and even drink a shot in the café in the shade.

  • The museum can be reached with the ticket in front of Durbar Square. We were surprised by the beautiful exhibitions, especially the permanent exhibition. Good information in English. The building alone is worth a visit more than.

  • The Museum is housed in the renovated Patan Royal Palace. It's exhibits date back to the 13th century, ranging from the raw architecture of the museum itself, to countless paintings, sculptures and carvings. Well maintained, clean and informative, it is easily the best museum in all of Nepal. As of writing this review some portions of the museum are being renovated; the exhibits are relocated to another wing.
