Sossusvlei, Namib-Naukluft Park

4.8
Sossusvlei represents a "pan" or lake bed, dry except for an occasional flood, surrounded by towering reddish sand dunes. Nestled in the Namib desert within Namib-Naukluft National Park, the area appears as a surreal landscape, where you can climb on the dunes and take photos of the desert scenery. Take your own four-wheel drive vehicle to the pan area, or book a tour through a local operator. As you explore the area, watch for ostriches, antelopes, and small desert rodents, especially if you visit during a rare flood occurence. • We booked a game drive from the Lodge including brunch. Many stop at Dune 45. If it is still busy, you better, after having taken a few pictures, drive through and stop here again. It is often a lot quieter. You then continue to the parking lot for normal passenger cars (total distance from the entrance is C.A. 60km over a paved road). The last 4 to 5 kilometers to Sossusvlei go through Los Zand. To be able to drive here, you must have a 4x4 vehicle with high clearance. However, you can also use one of the many shuttle services to Sossusvlei if you do not dare to drive through the loose sand or do not have a 4x4 car. If you are going with your own car, it is best to let your tire pressure run down to approx. 1.5 bar. We drove directly to the Deadvlei. If you have a good basic condition, you can climb the dune ' Big Daddy ' which borders on the Deadvlei. The ascent is rewarded with a beautiful view over the sand dunes. The trees that are in the Deadvlei are already 1000 years dead but due to the lack of humidity still do not go down. Before you return to your accommodation, a visit to the small Sesriem Canyon is still worthwhile. By the canyon you can take a short walk. In any case, take enough drinking water with you.

  • So dry and a beautiful sight here with those dried out trees that make here a special place of it.

  • If you're going to Namibia, you'll already know about this place. It's recommended to go either at sunrise or sunset; we went midday and yes it was really hot, but we had the dunes to ourselves.
  • This is a once in a lifetime trip, to follow the Tsauchab river past the dunes up to the vlei. You can take your car up to the parking, but you really do need a 4x4 continueing from there. Even if you rented one, poeple with little knowledge of offroading should take rather take the shuttle, as you will get stuck if you're unlucky. Walk the dunes and enjoy the lovely air. Best enjoyed by avoiding the midday sun and bring sun protection!!! #namibia #dunes #nature #amazing #bucketlist
