Mikasahama Beach, Hatsukaichi

4.1
#1 of 6 in Beaches in Hiroshima Prefecture
Featuring a narrow strip of coarse yellow sand, Mikasahama Beach offers views of a "floating" torii, the famous sacred red gate of the Itsukushima sanctuary. During the day, there is hardly enough room on the sand to spread a couple of towels, but as the day goes by and the tide recedes, more people come to the beach to stroll along the shore and enjoy picturesque sunset views across the water to the Japanese mainland. Keep an eye open for the friendly deer that roam around the beach looking for food. To visit Mikasahama Beach and other attractions in Hatsukaichi, use our Hatsukaichi travel planner.

  • I experienced it for the first time in decades in late October. It was just at low tide that I arrived at Itsukushima Shrine. It was the perfect time for the tide to start to fill around the shrine. It was the one to see that Mikasahama becomes smaller with the tide which pushes up with hitahita.

  • You can see Mikasabeach by walking along the coastline from Miyajima Pier terminal to Itsukushima Shrine. The beach was maintained on a shallow sandy beach and it was good. It was also good to be able to see the large torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine from Mikasahama. However, it was regrettable that the cover was hung on the large torii.
