St. Ambrose built Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio from 379 to 386 CE, making it one of the most ancient churches in the city. However, the majority of what you see today is from 12th-century restorations, hence its Romanesque style. Admire the mosaics in the apse, one of which depicts the life of St. Ambrose, Milan's patron saint. Look for the many faded frescoes in various nooks and crannies of the church. Visit the crypt under the high altar. It contains the remains of three saints: Ambrose, Gervasus, and Protasus.   Beautiful, ancient and oosing of history, Sant'Ambrogio is one of the most beautiful churches in Milan. Those who come to the city can not but visit it, it is worth it!

  Old roman church, with a crypt with San Ambrosio's remains visible. The entrance has a patio which was an open market place. Of course less impressive than the Duomo, but worth a visit.  more »

  Beautiful place. If using your phone to find it, be careful! I spent the morning trekking via Google Maps to the "Quartiere Sant'Ambrogio" only to find that it is a residential suburb of Milan quite some distance away.

  Beautiful church located in a calm area in Milan. Liked it more than the Dom. We were lucky the church was open for visitors, when closed seems there is not that much to see.
