Former residence of Xueyan Hu, Hangzhou

4.4
At Former residence of Xueyan Hu, get a glimpse of the wealth and splendor of the richest merchant of the Qing dynasty. The only merchant who was awarded with a read-topped hat--usually reserved for the court officials--built the residence in 19th century. Go down a secluded alley that leads to the front gate, then notice the shoe-shaped ingot pattern on the floor--a symbol of good fortune. Walk around the labyrinth of open-air corridors, oriental gardens, rocky areas, pavilions, and towers. See the hall, which Hu built to watch opera. Notice the Western-style chandeliers hanging in the main hall, where the merchant used to entertain foreign guests. • Interesting and labyrinthine building of an important character, born poor but ready, who achieved great economic successes, but who ended up ruined and persecuted. Nice spaces, especially some landscaped patios. If there is time you can visit but it is not a must in the city.

  • I found the visit to this villa (perfectly preserved) of an ancient and rich merchant really beautiful and pleasant. To get there from Hefang street take less than 10 minutes on foot and the visit can last from one to three hours, the entry price 20 Rmb. I particularly enjoyed the architectural style and harmony between all the buildings. As you can see from the photos that allego is frequented by many newly married Chinese couples to do the "wedding book" and young girls to do the photo book in traditional clothes, I found it very beautiful and interesting.

  • Beautiful house full of courtyard and interesting glass. Saw a weird fish flip around on the surface of the water...awesome.
  • A very beautiful residence with a garden like the best ones in Suzhou. The furnitures could be the part of an imperial palace too. I recommend to visit this place in Hangzhou!
